THE YEAR IN REVIEW
2008 was a year of challenges but the Golfaround members rallied and never let a bit of bad weather spoil their fun. May was a tad chilly; headbands and mitts were in vogue. June was not much better and we had to contend with rain as well. July and Stampede was warmer but more of the wild and wet stuff. Then along came August and it finally got warmer but not much. What a year, our only saving grace was that the tournament days were great. 2009 will be a better year.
NEW FOR 2009
We always do our best to keep the golfing journey new and inviting. You will see some changes and additions in the choices you have for 2009.
League
There are a number of members who have been taking lessons with Golfaround for a long time and are now at a level where group lessons are not meeting their needs. We recognize this and have offered a “league only” membership for those people who have been full time for eight years or more. This means they do not have to take a lesson and can also enjoy the other benefits of membership. Check the Programs page for details.
Lessons
Course Management is designed for the low handicapper. You will learn some game strategies as well as shot execution and effectiveness while playing on the course. This is also available in a one day clinic to meet the needs of those whose schedules make it difficult to plan for two days of instruction.
Level III
This program has been enhanced to include some Video Swing Analysis. Experienced golfers will benefit from the personalized approach.
Winter Swing Improvement & Conditioning
Jumpstart your golf season with this excellent training program. Learn to swing the club and not concentrate on hitting the ball which so many of us tend to do. All levels of golfers will benefit from focusing on the swing without the distraction of the golf ball. Taking this every year helps to improve our game by building muscle memory and the development of a consistent, improved golf swing. These programs are available to any women who want to improve their game, membership is not a
requirement. These programs are offered at both North and South Calgary venues. Check the Programs page for details.
BEGINNER GOLF LESSONS
Are you new to golf? We have the program for you and we support it with league play and opportunities to practice. We know what it is like to be a Beginner as we were one too. We take the fear out of learning the game and create a great environment for the skills to be learned, practiced and developed. Give us a call.
WINTER PRACTICE
Commencing January 15th we will be back at the Dome to practice and socialize. We arrive around 6:00pm, hit balls for approximately 45minutes and then socialize and have a bite at the restaurant.
Bring a friend and join us at the Eaglequest Golf Dome (Fox Hollow). Ask about their special. It includes range time and a meal. This is not an organized event, but there is usually someone there from Golfaround each week.

TOURNAMENTS 2009
The registration for tournaments in 2009 will be handled a little differently. As you are aware all our get-a-ways do fill up very rapidly and we want to be able to offer new members the opportunity. One of the members suggested handling sign-up the same way we do league, choices. We have decided to have people indicate a 1st; 2nd & 3rd choice, if they want to go to more than 1 tournament. Where and when this will happen has not been decided yet. Payment will still require the person be in attendance at the kick-off Social.

GREAT GOLFAROUND GALS TROPHY
Last year an anonymous donor gave us a trophy to recognize someone each year. We requested your input for possible recipients and Donna Gray was the recipient of choice. Her support of Golfaround, our values, other golfers and Golfaround promotion made her a wonderful selection. In 2009 we want the membership to keep this trophy in mind when you are out with Golfaround. We will be asking for your selections and votes at the end of the season.

TO DO OR NOT TO DO
Pet Peeves In the last newsletter we addressed “mulligans” or more simply put, “do overs”. How about Chatty Cathy? This is another pet peeve. This is the gal who cannot help herself from talking constantly. Comments may include “great shot” when in fact your ball ends up over the green in a deep bunker. She is unaware of how distracting her incessant babbling is and is only out on the course to socialize and talk about everything under the sun, not all related to golf either. We are out to enjoy and have fun but we must be aware of basic rules of etiquette. Be supportive and be considerate of who you are playing with and their pet peeves.
MOMENTS TO REMEMBER
There were a few who had some memorable moments when we were in New Zealand. Kristy got 94 at Carrington and chipped in 3 times in one game. Mike Woodman had a fit.
CARRINGTON’s Golf Resort Course, is located on the Karikari Peninsula, halfway between Doubtless Bay and the northern spit. It is the centerpiece of possibly the most diversified resort complex in New Zealand and maybe in the world. It's unlikely there is another golf course where you can break your round to sample the fruits of the complex's own extensive vineyard and winery. This is probably the reason why she did so well. It was great to be able to stop at the winery for lunch and wine before playing the back nine. Joan had one of her best games at the Gulf Harbour putting up a storm. Gail Ennis got 4 Par’s at Millbrook Golf Course. She also enjoyed boogey boarding (twice) down the sand dunes, hiking in Christchurch and Queenstown with Vivienne Rabb and Pat Reid as well as the luge, as did Cindy Judd, Tess and others. The group does bring out the adventure in us.
MULLIGAN MOMENTS
Remember the mulligan moment I shared in the last newsletter about the member who was trying to get her ball out of the water when she slipped and fell in? Well Kristy was lucky this did not happen to her. At the Millbrook Golf Course, she had difficulty finding her way to the next tee box, so went around the green only to find herself in a very dangerous position on the side of the hill ready to flip over into the pond. If it hadn’t been for Len Esler, she could have toasted the cart and taken a dip. Millbrook was really beautiful. Nowhere else in New Zealand can you play golf with a mountain range like The Remarkables as a backdrop. Carol Sadler will also attest to the fact that Dianne Stepien got attacked and robbed by Maori warriors….they took all her balls at Carrington…or so she told Des.

NEW ZEALAND
Our trip to New Zealand was fabulous; we toured both Islands spending time in Auckland, Pahia, in the Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Christchurch and Queenstown. We experienced the magnitude of ninety mile beach and boogey boarding down the massive sand dunes; the splendor of the sea and the
dolphins at play; the incredible beauty of the fauna; the majesty of Auckland’s harbor; we did not bungee jump from the Sky Tower; too chicken. We were also amazed by the grandeur of the geothermal plants near Rotorua and also enjoyed insight into the Maori culture at a reenactment at the Wairakai Treaty House and also in Rotorua where we sampled a Maori Hangi (meal).
Christchurch and punting on the Avon reminded me of my English roots and the roses in the Botanical Gardens were incredible. In Queenstown we enjoyed the gondola up to the Skyline restaurant; the thrill of jet boating in the canyons; the steamship excursion to the Walter Peak homestead and sheep station; and the majestic splendor of the renowned Milford Sound. We played four rounds of golf at some great courses and loved the Kiwi people.
As Gail mentioned “the great thing about our trips is there is something for everyone outside of the golf. The golf brings us together again as a group.” The Cook Island extension gave us some time to relax and enjoy the sun, sea and water sports. It was a wonderful experience enhanced by a great group of Golfaround people.
TRAVEL 2010 VIETNAM
Our Vietnamese dinner and presentation at the Oriental Phoenix was a success with 35 people in attendance. We have decided to postpone this adventure until 2010 because of the fact that a number of the New
Zealand travelers also want to come to Vietnam and March is a bit too soon following that trip. The other consideration is the economic climate right now. We have over 40 interested in 2010.
We will explore the southern city of Saigon, the Mekong Delta and the gorilla stronghold of the Cu Chi Tunnels. Then head to the central highland town of Dalat before cruising the off-shore islands of Nha Trang.
We then continue north through Hoi An, a World Heritage Site and shoppers paradise and Hue a quiet, relaxing city, big enough to be interesting but small enough to bicycle around. The food is great, the best in Vietnam, and the women are supposed to be the most beautiful in the country. We then fly to Hanoi. Discover this old city on a cycle and foot before setting out to cruise the limestone karsts of Halong Bay.
Experience an ultimate golfing adventure, from the bustle of modern Saigon to the languid, thousand-year-old streets of Hanoi and in-between. For a detailed itinerary and approximate costs, please give us a call.
