"To blog or not to blog" that is the question we have been asking ourselves for a while now. We think the newsletter format may have outlived it's usefulness and a new communication method is maybe in order. You, our members are the reason we are still here after 14 years and your input is and always will be important. Hence this may be the last newsletter in this format, stay tuned...
WIND-UP 2010
Night golf with a Luau buffet was planned for 100 Golfaround members. The participation from the group for costumes and cart decorations was marvelous, we were so impressed. Lynne Paulson
and Paula Williams named their cart Tee-kee Hut and It was made out of six twig placemats sewn on to a sun tanning mat, with a fake plant pulled apart and woven into the roof. The zebra pillows were from the Pottery Barn, and the sari skirts and purses were from Bali. How innovative was that?
Many others went to a lot of effort and some of the names were Skeletal Chicks, darned if I know how many of us could get away with that one; Tiger Wood’s Hot Tamales; Golden Girls and many others. River Spirit did a great job of the Luau buffet which was enjoyed by all of us. The night golf was an experience and had we been in Arizona or somewhere else south it would have been more enjoyable. It was a very chilly night unfortunately which did put a bit of a damper on the experience, but why would it have been any better? Didn’t we struggle with the elements all season? All in all I do think everyone had fun and we thank you very much for your efforts and creativity.
PEI GOLF GET-AWAY September 2010
There are more than 30 golf courses on this small island and the majority of them are picturesque, lush and green. We could only include three in our trip but a few other rounds were squeezed in by some of us. The picture to the right was Andersons’ Creek Golf Club a challenging track laid out over undulating lands with water hazards on many of the holes The distinct feature was the Creek itself. This challenging creek has to be crossed 4 times through out the round.
There were forty-four in our group including seven couples. Given PEI's small size, we were able to play a round and still have plenty of time for touring, dining, shopping and many other adventures. Our adventures included The Shellfish Festival; The Ross Family Ceilidh: Karaoke at The Lions Club; Lobster Suppers and much more. We ended up with our own kitchen party at our cottages.
PROGRAM CHANGES 2011
As you know we encourage your feedback and we listen to your constructive comments. Both the Spring Tune-up and the Short Game Clinic are appropriate for beginners and seasoned players alike. However when the session is a mix of skill levels the environment is not conducive to effective learning. Because of this we have tiered the sessions offering a Level II Spring Tune-up and a Short Game Basics and Beyond for players scoring 110 or less consistently on 18 holes.
SILENT AUCTION
We would like to support The Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter again by hosting a Silent Auction at either the Play & Stay or Mystery tournaments. To do this we need our members assistance to provide items to auction. Your help will be appreciated.

SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO
September 16 - 26, 2011
$2345 plus GST
Many locals will confide that September is their favorite month in Santa Fe. The summer crowds have thinned and there's rarely a wait for tables at restaurants. The city is steeped in the earthy scent of freshly harvested green chiles roasting at roadside stands. As summer starts its fade to fall, the weather is crisp and clear, with high temperatures averaging 78F degrees and lows averaging 48F degrees.
The Lodge at Santa Fe stands atop the hills of Santa Fe, offering convenient access to the historic Santa Fe Plaza and the ultimate in world-class art, shopping, dining and entertainment. The guestrooms are adorned with a distinct mixture of custom-designed furniture and art giving a rich and relaxing experience. We are only 5 minutes from the historic Santa Fe Plaza.
There are many museums and art galleries nearby as well as casinos and of course golf. The courses we are playing are Towa Golf Club, a course that runs along ridges against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Breathtaking views are seen from every tee. Paako Ridge Golf Club has a spectacular mountain layout cut through a mountainous evergreen forest. Last but not least is Black Mesa, a high desert links design woven through the sandstone foothills of Santa Clara Pueblo.
Our trip ends with the renowned annual Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta which is held every September with wine events and a large assortment of wines and food from Santa Fe restaurants. The mission of the Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta is to create a week of food and wine events that promote Santa Fe as a world-class culinary destination. Tickets for the Fiesta go on sale July 5th http://www.santafewineandchile.org/, it certainly sounds like something we should have on our “must do” list.
There are four spots open for the Santa Fe trip and spouses, friends and family are welcome.
TRAVEL ARGENTINA
Our Argentina adventure visits four scenic regions. One of them is the the hub of Argentina’s beautiful Lake District. Amid the beautiful landscapes of lakes, forests and snow capped mountains is the city of San Carlos de Bariloche where we arrive by plane from Buenos Aires.
Fifteen minutes outside the township is the golf course and lodge which will be our home for a few days. The Pestana Lodge is perfect for discovering the beauty of Patagonia. The hotel offers the quality of a mountain refuge with exquisite decor and first-class services. The rooms have incredible views of Lake Gutiérrez and the Andes mountains. The Lodge offers a myriad of activities for one to revel in nature and the great outdoors, all while enjoying the comforts of a deluxe hotel.
Playing golf at Pestana is a unique experience. Pestana Golf Club is one of the best courses in Patagonia surrounded by mountains and the blue waters of Lake Gutiérrez.

SWING IMPROVEMENT 2011
These programs will commence very soon. This program is beneficial for all levels of players, focusing on developing a good golf swing without the distraction of the golf ball. The program works as a jump start to the upcoming golf year and taking it every season will benefit your game greatly as you start to build muscle memory. In addition the off-season training and conditioning can get your body ready to hit the course when Spring has sprung and will give you the power and flexibility you need to lower your score.
WINTER PRACTICE
The Eaglequest Dome at Fox Hollow has again been the “meeting place”. We gather in the Dome’s upper level around 6pm on Thursdays to hit a few balls. We take advantage of the special which offers us 45 minutes of mat time and a meal at Mulligans, the onsite restaurant. The first night we went we thought there would only be the three of us, it was
-28˚C, but we were pleasantly surprised at the showing of 10. To date we have had up to 16 hardy souls which is just great.
EDMONTON NEWS
We have someone new to coordinate in Edmonton this year, Lynn Stolarchuk, a member of the Day League last year. Paige Nelson is unable to continue with her coordinator role but will remain involved and has been good enough to offer her assistance and support to Lynn in her new role. We are very happy to have Lynn and I know she will enjoy being involved with all of you. We will introduce Lynn to you at the Orientation and you will have an opportunity to meet her if you have not already done so. Great to have you on board Lynn. Paige and Lynn have organized your e-mail contact address and there will not be any changes for you. A few of you have also offered to assist and this is very much appreciated.
