GOLF AT LAST
So far it has been a very trying and challenging Spring. Winter was brutal and we thought we would have a fantastic season. Negative. So far it has been colder than average: wetter than normal and just plain ugly. Once in a blue moon we luck out and have a pleasant day to golf and for that we are grateful. If you look at the Farmers Almanac predictions for what to look forward to it does not look like a great season…cooler and wetter than normal. Seems like we are experiencing global cooling. But on a positive note we will carry on and do our best to have fun no matter what.
ORIENTATION/SOCIAL CALGARY
The new members to Golfaround were very supportive and came to Cottonwood and participated in the Orientation and the Social that followed. Cottonwood out did themselves with the food, it was outstanding.
Too bad so few of the existing members felt it necessary to be there to enjoy the get together, renew old acquaintances and meet new people. We were very disappointed in the turnout.
ORIENTATION/SOCIAL EDMONTON
The Edmonton members certainly put Calgary's to shame; there was a great turnout of both new and existing members. Lewis Estates also did a great job and everyone appeared to enjoy the evening. Thank you guys for being so supportive. It was great to see existing members present to welcome new members.
NEW TEAM MEMBER
We are very happy to have Paige Nelson heading up the day to day operation in Edmonton this year. She started with Golfaround as a Beginner golfer and now she is ripping up the course, breaking 100 for the 1st time this year. Paige has been a Golfaround member since day one and has always been supportive. Welcome Paige, we are happy to have you on board.
A number of members are helping this year, and to them we are very grateful. Just over 20 are booked to play Alberta Springs in the Red Deer area July 18th. I am sure Paige will plan a great event for you.
LESSONS
The weather issues have also affected some of the lessons. It all started with the collapse of the Eaglequest Dome at Fox Hollow. The beginner lessons had to be rescheduled in May and thank you so much for being flexible.
Winter Swing Improvement & Conditioning
The outdoor sessions at both the Elks and Cottonwood were blessed with good weather. Feedback from the majority of the participants indicated they really enjoyed the benefit of having the smaller groups.
The ratio and individual attention was great, we all learned a lot. Great value for the money.
ADOPT-A-HOLE
CN Canadian Women’s Open, Canada’s only LPGA event is at Priddis Greens Golf and Country Club in Calgary, Alberta, August 31st - September 6th, 2009.
Golfaround have the marshalling responsibility of one specific hole during the tournament. Many of you have joined the volunteer ranks and will have the opportunity to be close to the action at the tournament. We are very excited and pleased with our members' response.
TO DO OR NOT TO DO
SITUATION: A player's ball is deflected by ANOTHER BALL.
SOLUTION: If a player's ball is in motion and deflected or stopped by another ball in motion after a stroke on the fairway, the balls are played as they lie. There is no penalty unless the player played his/her stroke while another ball was in motion from a stroke made on the putting green.
If a player's ball is in motion after a stroke and is deflected or stopped by a ball at rest that's in play, the player must play his ball as it lies. The ball at rest which was moved must be replaced. There is no penalty in stroke play unless both balls were lying on the putting green prior to the stroke, in which case the player’s ball in motion that deflected off the ball at rest incurs a two-stroke penalty.
A HELPING HAND
One of the new beginner golfers asked if we knew where she could get some golf clubs. We sent an e-mail out to you the members and she was amazed at the response and generosity she received. She was able to pick up clubs, a bag and even a pull cart. People who responded immediately were Elaine Russell, Nancy Clements, Janice Chase, Maurie Maclennan, Donna Woodman, Emily Borelli, Mary Hennigan, Shannon Hayes, Suzanne Shutiak and Marielle Galibois. She thinks we have rounded up a great group of ladies and so do we.
DEMO & FIT 2009
The new Callaway Performance Center was the site for our Demo & Fit. This Facility is amazing and certainly state-of-the-art. This technology is used to fit touring professionals and is available to all golfers looking for the ultimate club-fitting session.
The process combines cutting-edge computerized analysis, high-speed digital photography, and hands-on expertise of certified club fitting golf professionals. Analysis of a number of important swing factors is performed, including: club head speed, ball speed, angle of attack, launch angle, ball spin rate, carry distance and total distance.
Our session was a taste of what could be done and a spot of wine and cheese rounded out the session.
This is not a retail facility but the information you receive can be used to order or purchase the right clubs for your swing. For a full hour long session there is a $60 fitting fee, with part of the proceeds going to the Jennifer Ashleigh Children's Charity.
MOMENTS TO REMEMBER
I golfed with the Beginners the first week of the season and it reminded me why we started Golfaround in the first place. I ventured out on this very cool afternoon wondering if we would play or not. I was pleasantly surprised that the gals were excited and anxious to play, some a little anxious as to how they would play. The experience with the Beginners was so rewarding. Andrea Harvey and Sue Schulz waited for me (Kristy) to tell me Andrea got a birdie and two bogeys. We had a great evening and even though we could see our breath when we started, the sun did come out. It was fun and reminded me that Golfaround does provide the opportunity to play with women like themselves and it is fun. I had a great night and met some great ladies.
One of our Dirty Dozen, Donna Woodman outdid herself at Crystal Ridge. She scored a 38 on the 9 holes, getting a birdie on the 1st par 4 and the last Par 5. WOW!!!
CALGARY GOLF SHOW GRAND PRIZE
Calgary member Elaine Rewcastle wins big - she was the recipient of the Grand Prize at this year's Golf Show. The prize was three nights accommodation at the Cove in Kelowna and four rounds of golf for two people at Predator Ridge, The Harvest, Gallagher's Canyon and The Bear.
Congratulations Elaine and we want to hear all about it.
