THE YEAR IN REVIEW

We did have many things to be grateful for this year even though we got off to a pretty chilly start. The weather certainly was not the best we have ever had but we did not experience the extreme conditions that many other places did. Be grateful for that. We managed to have some great games of golf with special people. Be grateful for that. All of our tournaments were blessed with very favorable conditions. Be grateful for that. We improved our game, even if only a little bit. Be grateful for that. We have lived, loved and had fun. I am very grateful for that and I am thankful that I have so many great people around me.

TOURNAMENTS

Stay & PlayThe Play & Stay this year was at Rocky Mountain House, Pine Hills Golf Club. We think we found another hidden gem in central Alberta. The Pine Hills Golf Club was certainly challenging but also very serene and scenic. As you can see we all relaxed on their large balcony overlooking the tamarack pines both before and after our game.

We enjoyed an outstanding meal and our stay at the Tamarack Inn was great, we even got a complimentary round of drinks in the Pub. I think they were lonely and 36 women just blew them away!!! The weekend finished up with nine holes at Lakewood Golf Resort in Sylvan Lake.

Mystery Bus Trip The Mystery Bus trip really was a mystery and no one guessed Wetaskiwin. We were able to have a shot gun start and that, in conjunction with a shorter journey, saw us home a little earlier, which was nice. Our mini silent auction, mulligans and lottery raised $1500 for the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter.
Fernie Get-A-Way

Fernie Weekend Get-A-Way the weather was fabulous. Can you believe it after being rained and snowed out for three years?

We started with 18 holes at Blairmore and there were 28 of us present. The tournament at the Fernie Golf Club was great and we also had lots of fun at Sparwood on Sunday.

Fernie Get-A-Way
The Edmonton Wind-up took place at Leduc and a good time was had by all. The members made sure there were lots of prizes to be won and everyone went home with something. Edmonton Wind-up

CN Women's OpenTHE CN CANADIAN WOMEN'S OPEN

A big thank you to all of our members who volunteered to marshal our holes at Priddis. It was an amazing experience to be up close and personal with the best female golfers in the world. Their form and flexibility is incredible. Oh to hit the ball the way they do! Many of us, especially the Hole Captains, Keitha Baer, Cindy Judd, Gloria Boogmans and Nancy Clements, put in long hours. I don’t think we knew what we were getting into, but all in all we enjoyed.

MOB’s
Hole in One(Moments of Brilliance)

Two of the Day League gals got a hole in one - Marilyn Jennings at Lynx Ridge on June 17 and Nancy Clements at Paradise Canyon on August 1st. Way to go ladies. Other MOB’s are: Nancy Boyd broke a 100 Aug. 11 at Sirocco; Karen Wilke got a birdie at McKenzie Meadows hole #7 and Andrea Harvey, a Beginner, got a birdie and 2 bogeys at McCall Par 3. I am sure there were more but these are the ones we were privy to. Something seems to sit in my mind about Suzanne Johnson breaking 90 at HeatherGlen.

TRAVEL 2010
Springtime in Victoria

Victoria

Imagine… a long weekend get-a-way to Victoria next Spring; staying in a luxury hotel on the inner harbour and watching the ferries and seaplanes from your balcony; walking along the seawall and enjoying the sights and sounds; sipping on wine and seafood delicacies at unique restaurants and a golf game at one of the awesome courses on the island.  Imagine no longer, how does a three or four night long weekend sound?

The Inn at Laurel Point offers everything you need to unwind. Imagine some great golf and we think maybe a culinary adventure would also be fun. When it's time to rest, this waterfront hotel is a welcoming sanctuary. It will feel subtle yet sublime, naturally calming, inviting you to slow your pace, smile more and sleep soundly.

 PEI

PEIThis fall we were lucky to be able to go to PEI for a short get-a-way. We loved every minute of our stay.  While we were there we thought it may be a destination for Golfaround in the future. Imagine... undiscovered beaches just 15 minutes away from any starting point; where dining on saltwater delicacies is just a way of life; where genuine hospitality is truly second nature; where renowned music & handcrafted treasures can be discovered around every bend; and where you can golf some of world’s most beautiful golf courses, all within an hours drive of each other.

There would have to be a different approach though and we are not sure if it could work. The plan would be to stay in cottages that provide all the comforts of home. The cottages have a spectacular view of the Rustico Bay and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. There is a heated pool and hot tub. To book the cottages we would have to have a committed group as the owner would be out of money if we booked and cancelled. The cottages are her livelihood and I do not think travel insurance would apply. In addition, a car rental would  be required. Your thoughts and or interest would be appreciated.

VietnamVIETNAM 2010

In February, 40 of us will embark upon another fabulous international adventure. The mixer Wine & Cheese will be held in January, and information regarding time and place will be communicated by e-mail.

DUCK TALES

Ducks and apparently some Golfaround members love water. This was very apparent at McKenzie Meadows Aug 13. Nine hardy souls: Ellen Valovich, Arlene Cadger, Wanda Moffatt, Cindy Holt, Karen Wilke, Joan Carr, Elaine Crocker & Di & Kristy braved the elements and did have a lot of fun. Too bad we were not more like ducks though and have the waterproofing they have, we would not have gotten soooo wet. The camaraderie was fabulous and reminded us the days gone by.

EAGLEQUEST GOLF DOME

The dome is open for business again. Many of the repairs and upgrades have been completed. We will start our Winter practice in January and a reminder will be sent to you. The format will be the same - Thursdays around 6:00pm. See you there.

CATHY BURTON
GOLF HALL OF FAME

Golfaround would like to congratulate Cathy Burton on her induction into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame on October 5th, 2009. Cathy has an impressive track record both as an amateur and a professional. She was a Team Canada member in 1986 and 1987 and was a member of Canada’s Commonwealth team, which won the Championship in 1987 in New Zealand.    No Canadian team has won the Commonwealth Championship since. Cathy has been a CPGA Class A professional since 1996. Cathy was a leading force behind the establishment in 1994 of the LPGA Girls Club in Manitoba, the first move into Canada for that program after a successful launch in the United States. It provided opportunities for young girls to get into golf. Cathy came to Calgary, from Winnipeg, in 2001 and was a teaching pro at Cottonwood Golf and Country Club this is where we first got to know her and recognized her teaching skills. She was head pro at Harvest Hills in 2004 and is currently head pro at River Spirit.

Congratulations Cathy!

GREETINGS FROM THE WOMEN'S EMERGENCY SHELTER

Dear Friends at Golfaround:

Thank you all so much for your wonderful support again this year. (We Golfaround, gave them a check for $1964) We are proud to have Dianne and Kristy – and each of you – as part of the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter Family. Here are a few highlights from the Shelter and an invitation to an upcoming event!

All of our programs at the Shelter continue to be busy. In February of this year, we experienced a 300% increase in calls to our 24 hr. Family Violence Helpline compared to the same month the previous year.

We are currently undergoing renovations to many areas of the Emergency Shelter, including our sixteen client rooms. With more than 800 women and children staying with us each year, you can imagine the wear and tear!  We are working to make all of our spaces more warm, welcoming and functional for clients and staff.

November is Family Violence Prevention Month. Watch for our Stand Together campaign in the Calgary Herald featuring well-known Calgarians taking a stand against family violence.

We encourage everyone to:

Get Help: Call our 24-hr Family Violence Helpline for information and support. (403) 234-SAFE (7233).

Give Help:
Learn how to recognize family violence and support victims.
Speak Up to create an environment where victims feel safe coming to you for help.
Donate so we can help women and children who need to end violence in their families. Support our Adopt-a-Family program this Christmas or make a donation through our Wish Book. www.calgarywomensshelter.com

Volunteer with our organization or directly with clients. We have volunteers who help on a weekly basis, on special projects, on committees and on our Board of Directors. Call Lindsay at 539-5129.

You are Invited! Please join us. .

All Golfaround members are invited to join us at a “CWES Family and Friends” event at Ten Thousand Villages  (www.tenthousandvillages.ca) November 16, 220 Crowchild Trail NW. 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Ten percent of all purchases will go to the Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter. Shop for friends, family, teacher gifts, etc. Also, we invite you to purchase a gift for a child in one of our programs to give to their Mom this Christmas.  Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to maureeno@cwes.ca
